The setup in short

The synopsis escalates in clear steps, each stranger than the last, and ends on a reveal in which the family seems to know far more than the newcomer. That gives the five episodes a sense of mystery that few stepmom stories even attempt.
Casting Jake as the outsider is a smart choice too, since you learn how the house operates at exactly the same pace he does. It is precisely this kind of inventive plotting that keeps us gladly spending on Candy.
