The setup
Room 742 starts out looking like a plain mistake. The narrator’s keycard opens a hotel room that a complete stranger already occupies, and instead of apologising and backing out, the narrator stays. Then comes a knock: the stranger’s wife. None of it surprises her, because she arranged it: she picked the narrator on purpose, and she has no plans to ask them to go. She would rather watch.
An early twist
Most Candy synopses stop at the premise, but this one reveals its surprise. The wrong room was set up from the start, so what seemed like a chance encounter turns into a plan run by somebody else. That is a smarter structure than the usual forbidden affair, and it gives the best role to the wife rather than to her husband or the narrator. Honestly, this is the kind of twist that keeps us coming back to Candy for more.
